How to set game graphics settings that match your PC instead of guessing

Modern PC games offer long lists of graphics options, but the default presets rarely match your exact hardware. Many players either leave everything on low and miss out on image quality, or push sliders too high and end up with stutters and inconsistent frame rates.
With a bit of structure, you can tune your settings in 20 to 30 minutes and get a smoother, better looking game that suits your specific GPU, CPU and monitor.
Start with your monitor and a clear goal
Before touching any game menu, decide what you want most: sharper visuals, high frame rates, or a balance. Your monitor refresh rate is a good anchor. If you have 60 Hz, anything consistently above 60 fps is largely wasted. On 144 Hz or higher, you benefit more from pushing frame rates up.
Competitive shooters and racing games often feel better above 100 fps, even if you sacrifice some eye candy. Slower single player adventures and strategy games are usually fine in the 50 to 80 fps range if visuals are richer and stable.
Update drivers and use a clean baseline
Graphics driver updates from Nvidia, AMD and Intel frequently include optimizations for specific games, bug fixes and sometimes noticeable frame rate gains. Before tuning, install the latest stable driver for your GPU and restart your PC.
In the game, apply the default or recommended preset that matches your hardware level, such as Medium or High. This gives you a coherent baseline instead of a random mix of settings from previous tweaks or old hardware.
Cap your frame rate and enable basic sync
Unlimited frame rates can cause big swings in GPU usage, extra heat and noisy fans. A simple frame rate cap smooths things out. Start with a cap equal to your monitor refresh rate (for example 60 or 144), or a few frames under it if the game supports that.
If your monitor has G-Sync or FreeSync, make sure it is enabled in the graphics driver and in the monitor menu. This feature reduces tearing and stutter when frame rates move around, without the heavy input delay that traditional V-Sync can introduce.
Lower the heavy hitters first
Some graphics options cost far more than others for relatively small visual gains. Reducing these first can free a lot of frame rate while keeping the game attractive.
- Resolution:Running native resolution gives the sharpest image, but dropping one step down can help older GPUs. If available, consider image upscaling tech such as DLSS, FSR or XeSS to keep sharpness when lowering internal resolution.
- Shadows:Ultra shadows are very expensive. Try High or Medium instead. This keeps shape and direction accurate while avoiding the heavy cost of tiny details.
- Ambient occlusion and global illumination:These add depth to lighting but are demanding. Turn Ultra or high quality modes down one level or use SSAO instead of ray traced options if frame rates are low.
- Ray tracing:Reflections and lighting using ray tracing look impressive but can cut frame rates in half on mid-range hardware. Start with it off, then selectively enable the least intensive ray traced feature if you have spare performance.
Then trim subtle extras you barely notice

Once the big settings are under control, look at features that are often turned up by default but add little in motion. Turning these down or off often recovers a few free frames.
- Motion blur:Many players disable this entirely. It can mask low frame rates, but often makes the image smeary and provides little benefit in fast aiming games.
- Depth of field and film grain:These add a cinematic style but can make the screen look soft. Lower or disable them for a clearer image and a small performance gain.
- Volumetric fog and god rays:Pretty in slow or atmospheric games, but you likely will not miss Ultra quality during intense action. Try Medium.
- Screen space reflections:Cheaper than ray tracing but still noticeable on the GPU. Reduce their quality or range in exchange for smoother play.
Balance GPU and CPU load
If your frame rate remains low after reducing the heavy visual options, you might be limited by the CPU instead of the GPU. This is common in very large open worlds, city builders or games with huge numbers of units or players.
CPU heavy settings include draw distance, crowd density, physics quality and vegetation density. Reduce these gradually and watch large scenes, like cities or huge battles, to see if stutters improve, especially when the GPU usage graph is not near 100 percent.
Use built-in benchmarks and repeatable test scenes
Many modern titles include an integrated benchmark that plays the same scene each time. Use it whenever available. Change a single setting, run the benchmark, note the average and minimum frame rates, then revert or keep the change based on the result.
In games without a benchmark, find a demanding spot such as a busy market, forest or big combat area. Use that same location whenever you test new settings so you can compare more reliably.
Save profiles and keep a simple checklist
Once you find a combination that works, save it as a custom preset if the game supports profiles. Take a screenshot of your settings menu or jot down key values for resolution, frame cap, shadows, ambient occlusion and post processing options.
When you install a new game, reuse a simple checklist: update drivers, set frame cap, adjust resolution or upscaling, lower shadows and heavy lighting first, then trim post processing. This habit speeds up future tweaks and helps you get consistent results across your library.
