How to fix audio delay so movies, games and calls stay in sync

Few things are more annoying than seeing lips move before you hear the words, or watching an explosion that arrives a split second late in your ears. That gap between picture and audio is called latency, and it shows up in movies, gaming, video calls and music practice.
The good news is that it usually has clear causes and practical fixes. You do not need studio gear or deep technical knowledge, just a basic understanding of where delays come from and which settings to tweak first.
What audio delay really is
In simple terms, audio delay is the time it takes for sound to travel from the source to your ears compared with the image on screen. If audio arrives later than the picture, you get the classic “dubbed movie” effect. If it arrives earlier, things feel strangely disconnected.
Every device in the chain adds a little processing time: the TV or computer, any receiver, a streaming box, even the connection to your headset. One step is usually fine, but stack several together and the delay becomes obvious.
Start by checking the easiest causes
Before diving into menus, rule out simple issues. If you are streaming a movie or call, pause and resume, or close and reopen the app. Sometimes a brief glitch in the connection throws timing off, and a restart brings everything back in line.
Next, try another source. If a console is out of sync but a built in app on the TV is fine, the problem is likely with the console settings or its connection. If every source is delayed in the same way, focus on the display or audio path instead.
Use built in lip sync and delay settings
Most modern TVs, streaming boxes and audio receivers have a “lip sync” or “audio delay” setting. This lets you nudge sound earlier or later in small steps, usually in milliseconds. The name may differ, so look for options like “A/V sync” or “Sync adjustment.”
A practical method is to put on a scene with clear speech or sharp actions, like clapping or door slams. Adjust the delay slowly until motion and audio line up. If your device offers automatic lip sync based on HDMI, enable it first, then fine tune by ear.
Reduce processing that slows the picture
Sometimes the audio is not late, the image is. Video processing modes on TVs can delay the picture to improve sharpness or smoothing, which makes audio seem early. On a TV, try turning off heavy post processing and enabling the “Game” or “PC” mode, which usually reduces lag.
If turning on a low latency mode fixes the problem but changes picture quality too much, find a compromise: disable only the most intensive effects like motion smoothing, edge enhancement and noise reduction, and leave milder settings on.
Bluetooth and other wireless links

Bluetooth audio often adds noticeable delay, especially with basic codecs. For watching video, look for devices that support low latency profiles such as aptX Low Latency or LC3, and make sure both the source and the headset support the same option.
If you cannot change hardware, some apps and TVs have separate sync settings for Bluetooth connections. Use those to compensate. For gaming or music practice where timing is critical, a wired connection is still the most reliable way to avoid lag.
PC and console tips for lower latency
On a computer, different audio drivers and processing layers affect delay. If your software offers a “low latency” or “exclusive” mode, enable it. In music and recording apps, lower the buffer size gradually until you find a balance between responsiveness and stability without glitches.
Game consoles usually offer a simple audio format setting, such as stereo or bitstream. If you notice delay when using virtual surround formats, try switching to plain stereo to see if the extra processing is the cause. Connecting the console directly to the TV, then sending audio out, can also change timing.
Streaming services, apps and video calls
Streaming platforms and call apps sometimes drift out of sync if a connection is unstable. In meetings, turn off background audio effects or “studio” processing, and close unused apps that may strain the device. Switching from a browser to the native app can also help.
If you record or livestream yourself, do a short sync test before going live: clap once in front of the camera, then check the replay. Many broadcasting tools have manual sync sliders so you can shift either the picture or the audio to match the clap perfectly.
When the problem is the room, not the gear
Physical distance can introduce a tiny delay too. In a large room, sound from a TV’s built in drivers or a separate system may arrive later than the picture, especially if devices are placed far off to the side. Moving them closer to the screen often tightens the experience.
Reflections from hard walls and floors can smear fast sounds like dialogue consonants and drum hits. Simple steps like adding a rug, curtains or a bookcase near reflective surfaces can make timing feel clearer, even if the electronic delay is small.
A simple order of operations
To fix sync issues efficiently, try this order: restart the app or device, then test a second source. If the problem persists, reduce heavy video processing, enable low latency modes, and tweak lip sync or delay settings. Only then look at cabling changes or new hardware.
Once you know where delay usually enters your system, small adjustments keep movies, games and calls feeling natural, without constant menu diving or guesswork.
